As a leader in energy storage solutions, Nilar puts a lot of focus on ensuring that every Product leaving our factory meets the highest standards. That’s why we invest heavily in R&D and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. It’s also why we produce a complete solution, from cell level to functioning system using our unique and patented bi-polar design.

Nilar bi-polar design

Bi-polar Design

In the bi-polar design, cells are laid horizontally and stacked on top of one another to gain maximum space efficiency. The common/shared current collector reduces the volumetric overhead of the current collector and inherently results in uniform current flow across the cell, thus making it ideal for high rate discharge applications.

  • The volumetric overhead is approximately zero as compared to the cylindrical and prismatic technologies. This gives an immediate volumetric density advantage of 10% or greater.
  • Uniform current and resistance paths promote uniform heat generation, which enables uniform ageing of the cells and ensures longer cell life.
  • Easy assembling and disassembling.
  • The bi-polar design is mainly suitable for larger applications.

Competitors’ design

Cylindrical Design

The majority of cylindrical cells have become very popular for portable electronics because of their versatile shape, compact size, and high production levels. This makes them ideal for low capacity applications.

  • The number (and quality) of welds, current collector width (and thickness), and cell length influence the impedance and power capability.
  • The design has an inherent ability to contain high gas pressures, which is important for recombinant batteries that produce high gas pressures during charge or discharge.
  • High overhead volume requirements for current collectors and packing two or more cells into an array.
  • Potential for high cell impedance and lower manufacturing yield.
  • Stability issues and uneven cell aging.
  • Packaging volume to active material is between 20% and 40% of the total volume.

Prismatic Design

In this type of construction, multiples of the same electrode are connected in parallel. Because prismatic cells take advantage of paralleling many electrodes, they are the ideal choice for high capacity cells. Single cell applications are not common.

  • In applications where thermal management is required, an engineered minimum space between the cells can be achieved.
  • Well proven design.
  • In high C-rate applications, stability issues and uneven cell aging can occur due to uneven current paths.
  • Prismatic cells require more mechanical support for battery chemistry types that generate high internal gas pressures.
  • 10% and 20% volume overhead must be allocated to packing the current collectors.

Quality & Safety

The main focus of our R&D department is to advance all aspects of energy storage from performance, and cyclability to battery management software development, while upholding our commitment to sustainable solutions.

With state-of-the-art laboratories in Sweden and the US we have a global team of R&D experts. It’s partially thanks to them that we can deliver and assure high quality from battery cell to functional system.

The R&D department of Nilar is currently focusing on smart grid applications to extend our offering for grid support, renewable energy storage as well as other services.

Battery Management System (BMS)

Our in-house software development team has designed a state-of-the-art battery management system software that can be tailored to meet the energy management needs of your application. The intuitive system can be programmed to react to changes in energy demands, while remote data and alarm support enables you to monitor the system from a phone or laptop at anytime. In a final solution the Nilar BMS will be integrated with the Energy Management System (EMS) of the customer.

Made from scratch in Sweden

The battery itself is produced and assembled from cell to pack at our factory in Sweden. This synchronised production process enables us to deliver consistently high quality units. Furthermore, our refined design and manufacturing process, means that our batteries have far fewer parts than other modern industrial batteries. The BMS software is developed in-house to ensure optimised control of the energy storage. Battery control cabinets, switchgear, and inverters are sourced from reputable manufacturers and meet industry standards for applications.

Nickel metal hydride batteries are based on a mature technology that has been used commercially for over 25 years for a variety of applications including consumer
products, electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and stationary power applications. The introduction of batteries into cars are now driving the safety regulations both for vehicles and other battery applications, such as energy storage.

Main safety benefits of Nilar batteries:
  • Battery system with water based, non-flammable electrolyte: No risk of spontaneous fire or explosion.
  • No risk of short circuit generation even under low temperature charging as observed in other solutions: No risk of spontaneous release of energy, rapid temperature increase with fire and explosion as potential consequences.
  • Electrodes contained in Nilar modules cannot ignite or react spontaneously: No risk of heat propagation between modules under normal operation and rest periods.
